For those interested in the intricacies of Gonstead Guitars
All Gonstead instruments share some characteristics that are
consistent with each other. The wood chosen is always of top
quality. An advantage Mr. Gonstead has over larger companies
is that he can pick through a pile of master grade pieces of
wood and find the best among the best. He looks for consistency
in density, color, and deflection. To achieve a refined sounding
guitar one must study the intended wood, make note of its inherent
qualities, and use that information to create a soul-stirring
instrument. Even within the same type of wood, each particular
piece is different. That is a major advantage in buying from
an individual builder over a large company. Mr. Gonstead believes
the aesthetic
quality of an instrument is of equal importance. The soul must
be stirred from the moment one lays eyes on thenstrument. There
is an endless variety of stunning and unique wood available
that meet the criteria for quality tonewood. Refer to the price/options
list to get an idea of what some of the possibilities are.
Basswood
is used for the lining of the guitar. It has an insulating effect
and helps focus the vibrational energy to the cone. Sven uses
Sitka Spruce for all of the bracing of the instrument. Spruce
has the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood. The head
block (where the neck joint is located) of the instruments is
made of Honduran Mahogany with an option to use walnut; both
very stable even grained woods. The tailblock is made of laminated
Baltic Birch. This eliminates the problem of cracking that can
occur where the strap button and output jack is located. In
regards to the cone, all Gonstead instruments come standard
with a Quarterman cone. These are simply are the best cones
available. If you have any other questions about what kind of
structural wood Sven uses and why, please e-mail him with your
questions in the contact me portion of the site.
He is happy to answer any questions.
